Why Hire a Doula?

You may be thinking to yourself "Why should I hire a doula?" It's not covered by (most) insurance. I already have a doctor (or midwife) and there will be nursing staff. My family will be there to support me. So what do you really get out of hiring a doula?

Undivided Attention

You get continuous, one-on-one support. Someone who is there the entire time to help ensure that your needs are met, whether it's massage, assistance with position changes, or someone to fetch a drink or snack to keep you energized. Nurses are wonderful But they have other people to tend to and other duties to perform. A doula is available for you during your entire labor.

Trained Support

Your mom, sister, and best friend are amazing, but chances are that they are not trained in birth support. Doulas go through trainings in comfort techniques, position changes, and emotional support, and are prepared to be there for you. Also, your doula has no opinion on your birthing choices, and will not try to change your mind or discourage you if you choose to try something that perhaps your mom, sister, or best friend have never heard of or are not supportive of. Your doula is there to give unbiased support.

Support for Your Partner

You may think that you don't need a doula because your partner will be there. However, doulas provide support for your partner as well. Your partner can stay by your side while your doula steps out to get drinks or snacks for you both. Your partner may not know what to expect during the birth, and a doula can help to explain what's happening and keep your partner calm.

There are many reasons to make a doula part of your birth team. For many people, hiring a doula is worth every penny.
